What is a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), and how is it different from other retirement communities?

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) offer residents a continuum of care; from independent living through assisted living and skilled nursing care, all on one campus. In addition to providing independent housing in a community especially designed for persons 65 and older, Foulkeways guarantees, contractually, that acceptance into the community includes a continuum of housing and healthcare services, regardless of your level of need during your lifetime. Without this guarantee you are often left to locate appropriate healthcare and living space, just when you may need it the most. Foulkeways at Gwynedd was founded by the members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1967 and is a non-profit, Continuing Care Retirement Community.

Is the entry fee at Foulkeways refundable?

Beginning January 1, 2008, Foulkeways will offer both a 50% and 90% refundable contract along with our traditional ‘no refund’ entry fee.

Regardless of the contract option you choose, Foulkeways entry fees are based on the size of the apartment or cottage you occupy, as well as the number of inhabitants. A portion of your entry fee is used to help cover future health care costs and your entry into other levels of care, should you need these services during your lifetime.

Our traditional ‘no refund’ entry fee offers the lowest entry cost.

With our traditional contract you have a period of six months to terminate your contract and still receive a full refund of the fee, and you have up to 50 months to terminate your contract and receive a pro-rated refund.

Both our 50% and our 90% refundable contracts are not age restricted.

Both contracts are pro-rated based on a 10-year occupancy date. If you have lived in our community for 10 years prior to your death, your estate will receive a full refund.

How do I know if I can afford to live at Foulkeways?

Because each applicant to our community is evaluated individually, prior to entry, there is no "exact" answer that applies to all prospective residents. However, generally speaking, whether you are considering an efficient studio apartment or a 2-bedroom apartment or cottage, a one-time "entry fee" is required at move-in. A monthly fee is then assessed, dependent on the size of the unit and the number of people living in the unit. This monthly fees includes all utilities, including cable and local telephone coverage, routine maintenance, weekly housekeeping services, medical care, prescription medicines, and one meal per day. As a rule of thumb, your monthly income should equal approximately one-and-one half times your monthly fee. (See our entry and monthly fee listings posted on our website.)

What if I change my mind about coming to Foulkeways after I have placed myself on the priority list?

Your $1,000 Priority Fee will be returned to you. The $200 per person application fee is non-refundable.

When I die, will my estate receive any money back from my investment in the Foulkeways community?

No refund or portion of your original entry fee will be returned to your estate or family, upon your death. Foulkeways chooses instead, to maintain one of the most comprehensive and competitive monthly fee structures in the industry.

To move into the community at Foulkeways, I first need to sell my house. Do you 'wait' for the sale to be complete to collect your entry fee?

You will normally receive 60-90 days notice when a unit becomes available. However, Foulkeways can offer you a 'swing loan' at an interest rate of 1% above the prime rate, until you sell your home. This loan will allow you to move into Foulkeways as soon as a unit becomes available. Foulkeways does not set aside a unit, based on the contingency of the sale of your home.
