A major goal of our Abington House building project was to address feelings of isolation voiced by those living in Assisted Living and Skilled Care. Our answer to the challenge was to enhance interaction between all residents living at Foulkeways.
Thinking &‘;outside the box,’ Abington House was designed to place services used by the entire community within the healthcare setting. Abington House is also home to Foulkeways’ Community Library, Pharmacy, Hair Salon, Physical Fitness, Computer Lab, Community Lounges and Meeting Rooms, Activities Center, Medical Drivers Offices, Memory Assistance Neighborhood and a new dining room open to all members of the community. Foulkeways’ official &‘;Main Street, runs from the entrance of Abington House to the entrance of Gwynedd House, bringing together members of the independent population, assisted living and skilled nursing care. Health care residents now report the positive benefits of interacting with other Foulkeways residents in all sorts of settings. Where isolation once existed, inclusion and great enjoyment of enhanced spaces and options now exists.
Residents living in our independent apartments report that their apprehension about moving into health care, “some day” has lessened. Residents living in Abington House report that the design and programming feels, “so supportive and friendly,” and observed that, “This is how it should have always been.” An unexpected benefit has also arisen. Couples, who previously would have had to separate, now are able to continue to live together, thanks to the innovative thinking and unique design concepts that went into creating Abington House.
