During the American Revolution, colonists did not fight under a single, unified flag. In 1775, the Second Continental Congress created the Continental Army to organize the colonies’ military efforts, and the Continental Colors flag emerged as an early symbol of unity and independence.
On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14 as Flag Day, honoring the flag’s history and enduring significance.
