Foulkeways Model Woodland Project, called Our Model Woodland
Green and Sustainability

Foulkeways Model Woodland

History and Purpose

The Foulkeways model woodland project, named “Our Model Woodland” (OMW), provides a demonstration of an ecologically functioning habitat that will attract and support native birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, spiders, fungi, and other organisms.  The project’s intent is to inspire similar plantings and enhance the ecological function and beauty of the Foulkeways campus.

Volunteers Planting Groundcovers
Admiring the Young White Oak

The Environmental Stewardship Committee (ESC) began to plant native trees, shrubs, and perennial groundcovers in a 2,100 sq. ft. plot along the Oak Trail in October 2023.  The native woody plants and perennials were chosen for their ability to produce seeds, nuts, berries, nectar, pollen, and foliage for our local wildlife. The plants, including the groundcovers, are planted densely to enhance the health of the plantings, reduce the need for ongoing maintenance, and offer increased biodiversity. Volunteers from ESC will continue to add additional plants, monitor their growth and health, and provide ongoing care.

Our Model Woodland is an educational project to demonstrate a healthy native plant habitat. It was inspired by Doug Tallamy, entomologist at the University of Delaware. His research shows how native plants support the rest of the web of life. He founded Homegrown National Park whose mission is to restore natural habitat and biodiversity at the local level. Further information on Tallamy’s approach to ecological landscaping can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBWhaTbe_x0

Residents are encouraged to use native plants in their patio gardens. Many of the OMW plants, particularly the smaller shrubs, perennials, and ferns, are suitable. Residents can request permission to install native plants in their courtyards or plant a native tree as a memorial.

Our Model Woodland Volunteer Opportunities

If interested in volunteering to support this project or other efforts to enhance Foulkeways’ natural environment and conserve our planet’s resources, phone 215-643-2200 to contact the leadership of ESC, one of the committees of the Foulkeways Residents’ Association.
