Facts About Martin Luther King Jr.:
1. Dr. King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, as Michael King Jr. His father later changed both of their names to Martin Luther King in honor of the Protestant Reformation leader.
2. A gifted student, Dr. King entered Morehouse College at just 15 years old, where he began developing his commitment to social justice and leadership. Martin went on to Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania graduating valedictorian of his class.
3. He went on to earn a doctorate in theology from Boston University at the age of 25.
4. In 1964, at age 35, Dr. King became the youngest recipient at that time of the Nobel Peace Prize, recognized for his nonviolent leadership in the Civil Rights Movement.
5. Dr. King is the only U.S.-born individual whose birthday is recognized as a federal holiday. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed legislation designating the third Monday in January as Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
