Community Garden at Foulkeways

The New Community Garden Opens for Residents

A new chapter is growing at Foulkeways. The new Community Garden at Foulkeways reflects the vibrant spirit of resident-led programs and activities that make our community unique.

After nearly 60 years of serving resident gardeners, the original garden was ready for renewal. What followed was a remarkable collaboration between residents and staff to create a modern, accessible space for all where gardening, learning, and community can flourish for years to come.

The project was led by the Community Gardens Committee, chaired by Tom Elkinton. Committee member Peter Bergson and many dedicated resident volunteers also played key roles. They worked closely with Grounds Department team members Mike Gonnert and Andy Burr. Together, they created a welcoming new resource for the entire community to enjoy and tend to.

Resident Leadership Brings the Community Garden at Foulkeways to Life

One of the defining characteristics of Foulkeways is its strong tradition of resident-run activities and programs. The new Community Garden at Foulkeways is a shining example of what residents can accomplish when they work together toward a common goal.

The redesigned garden features a variety of raised planting beds to accommodate different gardening styles and physical abilities. Traditional wooden beds have been rebuilt, while elevated metal beds provide easier access for gardeners who prefer less bending and kneeling. Wide, stable pathways make the garden more accessible for residents using walkers, wheelchairs, or other mobility aids.

In addition, the project included convenient water access throughout the garden and new fencing to help protect crops from deer and rabbits. The orchard and garden areas have been thoughtfully redesigned to create an open, welcoming environment while preserving the character of this beloved community space.

Growing Community Through Gardening

The Community Garden at Foulkeways is more than a place to grow vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruit. It is a place where residents connect with neighbors, share knowledge, learn new skills, and enjoy the satisfaction of growing something together.

From the earliest planning stages through construction and installation, volunteers contributed countless hours to bring the vision to life. Their efforts demonstrate the resident-driven spirit that has long been at the heart of Foulkeways.

Whether you are an experienced gardener or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, we invite you to visit the new Community Garden at Foulkeways and see how residents are helping cultivate a stronger community.
